S/H 1974 Gibson SG Special, Walnut

These SG Specials are a real triumph of Norlin era Gibson.

After the acquisition of Epiphone in the late 50s and the subsequent surplus of mini Humbuckers - which were revered for their crisp and bright tone in models such as Epiphone Riviera's & Sheratons, whilst still cancelling any interference -  the decision to upgrade the Specials and Deluxes from P90s was not only cost effective for Gibson but provided a really happy marriage of the deep and rich tonality of the Mahogany body with the glassy, articulate properties of the mini Humbucker. 

This guitar in particular is a great example of how the relationship of the material and pickup has strengthened over time, a beautifully resonant and well balanced instrument with plenty of gas still left in the tank.
